Do I have to pay for something in a non-profit organization?

Non-profits may handle this in one of two ways: You purchase the puppy from them. Just like you purchase cookies from the Girl Scouts or a used typewriter from Goodwill - being a non-profit doesnt mean you cant sell things, just that you cant make a profit overall. You make a cash donation and they give you the puppy. This is how my organization does it. This way your cash is tax-deductible (it is also, unfortunately non-refundable if it doesnt work out). No organization is just going to give you a puppy for several reasons: They need money to keep doing what they are doing. You have proven you are serious enough about getting a puppy to pay for it. Fewer people who want to do bad things with a puppy are willing to pay money for a puppy.
